Before you book

This tour does not start in West Yellowstone. It picks up north of the park and goes in by the North Entrance, on the North Entrance to Northeast Entrance road, the only road in the park open to cars all year. Visitors 16 and older who do not live in the US also owe the park’s $100 nonresident fee; an annual or America the Beautiful pass covers it.

Where it starts

Pickup at lodgings in Bozeman, Livingston, Paradise Valley or Gardiner, not West Yellowstone; staying outside that area, you join the van at a meeting point the operator sets. Pickup comes with the tour for all guests.

Its pickup list has lodgings in Bozeman, Gardiner, Livingston and Pray.

Pickup details

Guests are collected at their lodging if it is in Bozeman, Paradise Valley or Gardiner.

Staying somewhere else? The company says you can meet the van in town and get on there; ask it where.

About this tour

Spend a winter day in the north of Yellowstone with only your own group. Snow lies over the wide views, the steaming hot springs and the tall cliffs.

A naturalist guide explains how the land took shape and talks about the Native peoples of the area, the park’s past, and the plants and animals you pass.

The company drives you to the park and back, so nobody in your group has to handle snowy roads. It also arranges the snowshoes for the walk.

Guests from abroad could face a new park fee as well. If so, the park collects it on the day rather than at booking.

The route

Stop order and times both come from the operator. On the day, wildlife and traffic can change the times.

  1. Mammoth Hot Springs

    About 45 minutes

Stop at Mammoth Hot Springs, where hot water builds steps of pale stone, and look at Canary Spring.

  2. Lamar Valley

    About 3 hours

Some call this valley North America’s Serengeti. The guide helps you look for wolves, bison, moose, coyotes, foxes and bighorn sheep.

  3. Calcite Springs Overlook

    About 3 hours

Choose a hike or a snowshoe walk to a lookout over the Yellowstone River, where hot springs line the sides of its canyon.

What is included
