Before you book
You join this tour north of Yellowstone, not in West Yellowstone. It enters by the North Entrance and keeps to the North Entrance to Northeast Entrance road, the one park road kept open to cars through the whole year. Anyone 16 or older from outside the US also owes the park’s $100 nonresident fee, unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass.
Where it starts
Pickup at your door within 3 miles of central Bozeman, Livingston or Gardiner, anywhere on the road between Bozeman and Gardiner, or at Mammoth Hot Springs; from West Yellowstone, you drive to Bozeman to meet the guide. Being picked up and meeting at the start point are both allowed.
Lodgings on its pickup list are in Bozeman, Gardiner, Livingston and Mammoth.
Pickup details
Door-to-door pickup covers lodgings within 3 miles of the middle of Bozeman, Livingston or Gardiner. It also covers anywhere on the road from Bozeman to Gardiner, and Mammoth Hot Springs.
Lodging outside that area? Then you meet the guide in one of those towns, at a spot you choose together.
Guests staying farther away, such as in West Yellowstone, Big Sky or Belgrade, meet the guide in Bozeman.
About this tour
Sky’s the Limit Tours takes your group, and nobody else, into northern Yellowstone for a day in the snow. You ride in a heated vehicle with all-wheel drive, and the company collects you in Bozeman, in Livingston or at any point on the road down to Gardiner.
The day centres on Lamar Valley. In winter, wolves, bison, elk and foxes cross its snowy flats, and the guide sets up high-quality spotting scopes so you can watch them close up. Hot coffee, tea and cocoa keep you warm while you look.
How active you are is up to you. You can hike or snowshoe through the snow, or stay in or near the warm vehicle for most of the day. On the way you see Mammoth Hot Springs and waterfalls turned to ice, and the guide tells stories about the park’s animals, rocks and past.
A catered lunch is part of the price, and so are professional photos of your group. The company says its guides are local, certified and approved by the park, and that it plans the tour around your group.
The route
The operator lists the stops in this order and sets the time at each. Snow, wildlife and traffic can change those times.
-
Lamar Valley
People call this broad grassland America’s Serengeti, and it is the park’s best place for spotting animals. Old glaciers and the winding Lamar River shaped it. Bison herds, wolf packs, elk and many birds live here, and grizzly bears and pronghorn use it too, though bears sleep through most of the winter. You watch from the vehicle or from pullouts by the road, and animals are busiest early and late in the day.
-
Undine Falls
Beside the road from Mammoth to Tower, Lava Creek falls 60 feet in three steps over old volcanic cliffs, into a rough canyon of dark basalt. The falls take their name from water spirits in old tales, and they are at their fullest when spring snow melts. A pullout gives a clear view, or you can hike or snowshoe about a mile to a lookout on the far side.
-
Mammoth Hot Springs
Hot water at Mammoth leaves minerals behind, and over time they pile up into terraces of pale rock called travertine. The springs lie close to the North Entrance, a short way from Gardiner, Montana. Bacteria that thrive in heat live in the warm pools and tint the rock brown and red.
-
Slough Creek
This stream rises in the Absaroka Range and runs into the Lamar River. Its basin feeds a wide mix of wildlife and plants. You pull over at a few spots along it to search for animals, while the guide tells you how the area formed and what happened here.
-
Albright Visitor Center and Museum
This visitor center at Mammoth is a warm place to stop on a cold day. Its displays cover the park’s history, its rocks and its wildlife, and rangers can tell you about trails. Snow and steaming terraces lie all around it.
-
Roosevelt Arch
Theodore Roosevelt dedicated this huge stone arch in 1903, at what was then the park’s main way in from the north. It is about 50 feet tall and built from local basalt. The words cut into it say the park is there for people to benefit from and enjoy. For more than a hundred years it has greeted visitors who arrive through Gardiner, Montana.
