About this tour
Two Left Feet Tours drives you around the whole Lower Loop of Yellowstone in a private vehicle. Nobody in your group has to drive, work out the route, pick the stops or hunt for a parking space.
The day takes in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Hayden Valley, Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring, with waterfalls, geyser basins and mud pots in between. The company says its guides know the park well enough to get the most out of every hour, so you can watch the scenery instead of the road. Lunch and snacks are part of the price.
The route
These are the operator's stops, in its order and with its times. Animals, snow and other traffic decide how well the times hold on the day.
-
Gibbon Falls
At Gibbon Falls, the Gibbon River tumbles 84 feet down a staircase of rock. There is time to look at the falls and take photos. Thick pine forest covers the hills around it like a green blanket.
-
Norris Geyser Basin
Norris Geyser Basin is one of the hottest and most acidic places in the park, and it changes often. The boardwalk winds past bright hot springs, hissing vents and geysers that are still active. As you walk, your guide explains the volcano under your feet. Steamboat Geyser is here too. When it erupts, it is the tallest active geyser anywhere, sending water up to 300 feet high, more than twice the usual height of Old Faithful. But nobody can predict it: days or even decades can pass between eruptions.
-
Upper Falls
A short walk and a rock stairway lead down to the top edge of the Upper Falls, where the river drops 109 feet. A stone wall about 4 feet high keeps you safely back from the water. You can feel the river’s force as it rushes past and over the edge, and there are a few good spots for photos.
-
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is known for its yellow, pink and orange walls high above the river. From Artist Point you look down the canyon to the 308-foot Lower Falls. Your guide tells how the canyon formed and what happened here, and gives you time at the viewpoints for pictures.
-
Hayden Valley
Few parts of the park beat Hayden Valley for watching animals. Its wide, open land makes it easier to spot bison, elk, bears and more. Your guide helps you find them and explains why the valley matters so much to wildlife.
-
Yellowstone Geysers: Mud Volcano Area
This short stop is at the Mud Volcano area, where heat from deep below makes mud bubble, steam rise and colors form on the ground. You walk the shorter boardwalk loop to see its two main features and learn what powers them.
-
Yellowstone Lake
The road runs beside Yellowstone Lake, the biggest lake this high up in all of North America. Mountains rise behind its shores, and the guide can pull over at several spots along the water so you can take photos.
-
West Thumb Geyser Basin
At West Thumb Geyser Basin, hot springs and small geysers line the edge of Yellowstone Lake. You walk the boardwalk loop with your guide, learning what heats the water and seeing steaming pools sit right beside the cold lake.
-
Old Faithful
You watch Old Faithful, which the company calls the most famous geyser on Earth, shoot up over the Upper Geyser Basin. Your guide also takes you into the grand lobby of the historic Old Faithful Inn. More than 150 hot features lie in the basin behind the geyser. If your group wants, you can walk among some of the best of them before or after the eruption.
-
Grand Prismatic Spring
Grand Prismatic Spring is the biggest hot spring in Yellowstone and one of its most striking sights. Tiny living things that thrive in the heat paint it bright blue, green, yellow and orange. If your group is up for it, you can hike to the overlook and see it from above. If not, you walk the boardwalk right beside it.
-
Fountain Paint Pot
Fountain Paint Pot has bubbling mud, bright hot springs, steam vents and erupting geysers. Few stops this close to the main road show all four types of thermal feature side by side.
