Tour or no tour, a non-US visitor aged 16 or more adds $100 to the entry price, though an annual or America the Beautiful pass covers it. From West Yellowstone, cars may enter until 31 October 2026. After that the road is shut to them, and the tours that drive in from town halt as well.
Where it starts
Pickup in West Yellowstone at a place the operator confirms before the day; from town, the evening goes to Hayden Valley and the East Entrance road. Pickup is offered, and so is meeting the guide at the start.
Pickup details
Pickup is in Gardiner or at Mammoth Hot Springs. Coming from further away? You can meet the guide at a hotel in Gardiner.
The company also picks up in West Yellowstone, and evening tours from there focus on Hayden Valley. They confirm the exact place before the tour.
If no place is agreed, the company will pick you up at the Ridgeline Hotel in Gardiner. So if you are in West Yellowstone, set your pickup with them early.
About this tour
This evening tour is for people who would rather not get up before dawn. Yellowstone’s Casanova Guided Tours takes you out late in the day, when many animals are on the move.
From Gardiner or Mammoth Hot Springs, it leaves by 4 p.m. for Lamar Valley, often called the “American Serengeti” because its animals are so easy to see. There, the company says, you may see bears, wolves, moose and elk, as well as bald eagles, coyotes and badgers.
From West Yellowstone, the evening goes to Hayden Valley and along the East Entrance road instead. Wherever you start, a naturalist guide helps you spot animals and explains what you see as the sun goes down. Dusk is one of the busiest times of day for wildlife and a fine time for photos, the company says, whether this is your first visit or not.
The route
The operator sets these stops, their order and their times. On the day, animals on the road and traffic can shift them.
-
Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone covers almost 3,500 square miles of wild land on top of a volcanic hot spot. Most of it is in Wyoming, with edges in Montana and Idaho. It has deep canyons, mountain rivers, thick forests, hot springs and geysers, Old Faithful the best known of them. Hundreds of kinds of animals live here, from bears and wolves to bison, elk and pronghorn.
-
Lamar Valley
Lamar Valley lies along the Lamar River in the park’s northeast corner. People call it America’s Serengeti because big animals are plentiful and easy to see. The Junction Butte wolf pack is its most famous family, and wolf watchers set up spotting scopes there most days. The valley also has big bison herds, pronghorn, badgers, grizzly bears, bald eagles, ospreys, deer and coyotes. This part of the tour is for pickups in Gardiner and Mammoth.
-
Hayden Valley
Leaving from West Yellowstone, the tour heads for Hayden Valley and the East Entrance road, two good places to look for wildlife. Animals often get busier as the evening cools, so you watch for bison, elk, bears, wolves, coyotes and others. Your guide picks where to go from recent sightings and the day’s conditions, to get the most out of the evening.
