About this tour
Yellowstone ranks among America’s great treasures, and this full-day safari shows you its highlights: hot volcanic features, giant waterfalls, many kinds of wildlife, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Yellowstone Lake.
During the day you drive scenic roads, walk historic boardwalks, enjoy quiet natural places and use binoculars and scopes to watch wildlife. Your guide is also your driver, and tries to show you as many of the park’s famous sights as one day allows.
The guides at Yellowstone Safari Co. plan the day to make it one you remember. They think about road conditions, the weather, the season and what you want to see as they move through the park. Each tour is planned on the day, so not every tour makes every stop below; tell your guide what you most want to see.
Highlights:
- Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring
- The Upper and Lower Falls, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
- Geysers, hot springs, mud pots and steam vents
The route
Stops, as the operator orders them. Expect the operator's times to shift with wildlife and traffic.
-
Yellowstone National Park
The tour enters at the park’s West Entrance. Your route is decided by what you want to see, where wildlife has been spotted, and the weather and roads that day. The company says its guides have thousands of hours of experience and plan the safari around your group. Summer is building season in the park, and road work can slow the tour. Tell your guide what you most want to see, and they will do their best to work around closed roads, traffic and construction waits.
-
Firehole River
Hot springs along the Firehole River warm the water that flows into it, so the river is warmer than you might expect. Even with all the minerals from the hot water, the river is full of life, including brown trout and rainbow trout. Not every tour stops here.
-
Fountain Paint Pot
Fountain Paint Pot, in the Lower Geyser Basin, is a mud pot known for the reds, yellows and browns in its mud. The colors come from different amounts of rusted iron. Your guide explains the history and geology of the area. Not every tour stops here.
-
Old Faithful
Old Faithful is just one of about 500 geysers in Yellowstone, but it got its name because its eruptions are so easy to predict. Your guide explains the history and geology of the area. Not every tour stops here.
-
Yellowstone Lake
Yellowstone Lake is a fascinating place. Scientists have found geysers, hot springs and steam vents under the water, and the lake bed keeps shifting. Minerals in the water support many kinds of plants and animals. Your guide explains the history and geology of the area. Not every tour stops here.
-
Hayden Valley
Hayden Valley, in the middle of the park, is full of wildlife. Its floor was once the bottom of Yellowstone Lake, and now it has streams, grassy plains and hot features. The safari stops several times here to look for animals, and your guide explains the history and geology. Not every tour comes here.
-
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is more than 1,000 feet (305 m) deep. Water, wind, earthquakes and hot springs all helped shape it. You can see two waterfalls, the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls, from several viewpoints. Your guide explains the history and geology of the area. Not every tour stops here.
-
Upper Falls
The Yellowstone River flows north out of Hayden Valley and over the Upper Falls, then on to the Lower Falls. The two falls show clear differences in the layers of rock in the canyon. Not every tour stops here.
-
Lower Yellowstone River Falls
Native American tribes knew about the Lower Falls for hundreds of years, and the first photos of them were taken in 1871, on the Hayden Expedition. The falls drop about 308 feet (94 m) over volcanic rock and look amazing from several viewpoints. Your guide explains the history and geology of the area. Not every tour stops here.
